Pro football

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer met with media members via zoom news conference on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming NFL Draft that starts Thursday in Paradise, Nev.

The Panthers, coming off back-to-back 5-win seasons, currently have six draft selections – the No. 6 overall pick in the first round, the No. 137 overall pick in the fourth round, the Nos. 144 and 149 overall picks in the fifth round, the No. 199 overall pick in the sixth round and the No. 242 overall pick in the seventh round.

Fitterer said he, head coach Matt Rhule, the Panthers scouts are “very much of the same page” and were determined to be “aggressive” in the draft.

“We want to stabilize the quarterback position,” said Fitterer, who added that he had informed 2021 starter Sam Darnold that the team would be adding to the position.

In an attempt to deflect NFL rumors that the Panthers could be interested in Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, Fitterer added that the Panthers want to “get through the draft” before considering a trade for a veteran quarterback.

Fitterer said team owner David Tepper has been very involved in the draft preparation process but respects the scouts and the coaches.
