4-25-23 roundup: Pro basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer, High school baseball and softball, Middle school baseball and soccer, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

The Carolina Panthers are set to make their second No. 1 overall selection when the 2023 NFL Draft begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Kansas City, Mo.

Bryce Young

And the team is expected to select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with that first selection, the Panthers will become the 18th team to select a quarterback at No. 1 in the past 26 drafts.

Clearly, new Carolina head coach Frank Reich along with owner David Tepper, general manager Scott Fitterer and their fans who have suffered through a franchise-record five straight losing seasons hope Young will have a solid upcoming career.

The results of the previous 17 No. 1 overall selections offers mostly positive reviews.

Peyton Manning, the 1998 overall pick out of Tennessee by the Indianapolis Colts, went on to have a Hall of Fame career with two Super Bowl titles.

Other potential Hall of Famers chosen No. 1 in the last 26 years could include Michael Vick (2001), Carson Palmer (2003), Eli Manning (2004), Matthew Stafford (2009) and Cam Newton (2011).

It’s too early to tell about recent No. 1 selections Jared Goff (2016), Baker Mayfield (2018), Kyler Murray (2019), Joe Burrow (2020) and Trevor Lawrence (2021).

The others – Tim Couch (1999), David Carr (2002), Alex Smith (2005), JaMarcus Russell (2007), Andrew Luck (2012) and Jameis Winston (2015) – had solid if not spectacular or less than spectacular careers.

In Carolina’s history, Young would become only the third first-round pick at the position as each of the previous first-rounders – Kerry Collins in 1995 and Newton in 2011 – went on become Panthers’ starters that helped their teams advance to a NFC title game and a Super Bowl, respectively.

After Thursday’s opening round selections, the draft will continue Friday night and Saturday.
