By Richard Walker

Several local products are making impacts on the high school, college and pro scene.

Robbie Cowie

Former East Lincoln and Lincolnton star Sage Surratt on Sunday has the best pro football game of his career with 11 catches for 121 yards and one touchdowns for New Orleans in the Breakers’ 38-31 USFL victory over the Houston Gamblers.

Surratt, a 2017 Lincolnton High graduate who played football at Wake Forest, has caught 16 passes for 206 yards and one touchdowns in two games for unbeaten New Orleans (2-0), which plays the Birmingham Stallions at 12:30 p.m on Saturday on the USA Network.

Another former Lincolnton High standout, Robbie Cowie last weekend set a career record for saves at Catawba College. A 2018 Lincolnton High graduate, picked up the historic save in last Friday’s 13-11 win at Limestone.

Entering this week’s action, Cowie is 3-0 with five saves and a 2.45 ERA this season for the Indians (27-21, 16-7 SAC). Cowie has 26 career saves in 71 appearances.

On Monday, Gaston Day School senior Callum Richard announced he was committing to play at East Carolina University. Richard had originally committed to play at East Tennessee State.

And last week, Bessemer City’s all-time leading scorer Randall Pettus was selected to play in the annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game. That contest will be played July 17 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
