4-17-22 roundup: Pro golf, basketball and soccer, High school baseball and softball
By Richard Walker
Gastonia’s Harold Varner III keeps knocking on the door of his first PGA tour victory.

But for the second straight year, Varner finished frustratingly close to a win when he finished one shot off the lead and tied for third place in the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, S.C.
Varner (67-73-63-70) finished at 12-under-par for the tournament to finish in a seven-way tie for third – and one shot behind Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay; Spieth won the event in a playoff.
Varner’s third-place finish was the second-best of his seven-year PGA career; Only last year’s tie for second at the same tournament is better.
A 2008 Forestview High graduate who has won two international golf tournaments, Varner is currently ranked No. 39 in the World Golf Rankings and No. 46 in the FedEx Cup standings.
