After 24 years as an assistant coach, Darrel Wilson was named head coach at North Gaston High School.

Darrel Wilson

Wilson, a former Huss High and Appalachian State football standout, had spent time as an assistant coach at Huss, Bessemer City, Forestview, Kings Mountain and Crest before being officially named the Wildcats’ 11th head football coach in school history.

“We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to Darrel Wilson as the new head football coach at North Gaston High School,” North Gaston athletic director Jesse Martin said in a school news release. “With an impressive background as a Hunter Huss graduate and a football player at Appalachian State University, coach Wilson brings a wealth of experience and passion to his role as our head football coach.”

Wilson will become the Wildcats’ 4th head coach in 6 years and will try to reverse recent fortunes for the school as North Gaston hasn’t had a winning league record since 2007 and last year’s playoff appearance was its first since 2013.

A 1995 Huss graduate, Wilson spent last season as defensive coordinator for league champion Crest.

Wilson’s hiring continues a busy offseason in the area; He’s the 4th new Gaston County coach joining Cherryville’s Patrick Bowman, East Gaston’a Bret Story and Forestview’s Bret Story. Also, Crest last week hired Greg Lloyd as its new head coach.
