4-1-23 roundup: Pro basketball, soccer and baseball, High school baseball and softball, College basketball, Middle school baseball and soccer
By Richard Walker
Fresh off its historic Big South Conference and Football Championship Series playoff run, Gardner-Webb held its 2023 spring game on Friday night at Spangler Stadium.
A crowd of more than 1,200 attended the game in which the White team posted a 14-0 victory over the Black team.
The top priority this spring for a team with 18 returning starters has been to find a replacement for quarterback Bailey Fisher, who was the 2022 Big South Conference player of the year. Redshirt sophomore Matthew Caldwell, redshirt freshmen Xavion Brower and Will Mattison and Coastal Carolina transfer Ty Lyles are competing for the position.
Caldwell started one game last season and Brower also got some game experience last season as Gardner-Webb went 7-6 overall and 5-0 in the Big South highlighted by a 52-41 win at Eastern Kentucky in the school’s first-ever FCS playoff game.
Caldwell passed for two touchdowns – including a 73-yarder – to lead the victorious White Team offensively.
Brower and Lyles shared quarterbacking duties for the Black team and Mattison was the backup to Caldwell for the White team.
All-America running back Narii Gaither was limited duty but had several long-yardage plays coming off his 1,000-yard season in 2022.
