Belmont Middle School pulled an upset in Tuesday’s Gaston County Conference boys basketball championship game as the Wildcats knocked off previously unbeaten Southwest 52-42 at the Huss High gymnasium.

The Wildcats (10-2), whose head coach is Pet Sumner, won their third county title in history – joining the 2001 and 2011 teams as champions.

In Tuesday’s win, Jaishawn Woods (16 points, 8 rebounds), Dylan Bradley (16 points, 5 rebounds) and K.J. Shouse (13 points, 14 rebounds) led Belmont, which had lost 41-38 at home against Southwest on Jan. 31 in the regular season.

Southwest finished 11-1.

The 2022 Gaston County basketball season comes to a close on Wednescay when Holbrook (11-0) meets W.C. Friday (9-2) at 6 p.m. at Ashbrook High School.

Burns 18-7, Thomas Jefferson 0-0: Sayge Strange and Jaycee Bivins picked up pitching victories and Bivins had three hits, two triples, two stolen bases and three RBIs in the doubleheader sweep.

Piedmont Community Charter 9, Queen’s Grant 7: Grace East (two hits, two RBIs) led the offense and reliever Ashton Kenna picked up the win for Piedmont.

Pro basketball

Former Duke standout Kyrie Irving scored 50 points as the Brooklyn Nets rolled to a 132-121 win over the Charlotte Hornets in front of 17,230 at Spectrum Center Tuesday night.

Irving converted 15 of 19 field goals (nine of 12 3-pointers) and 11 of 13 free throws in 37 1/2 minutes.

Leading Charlotte (32-34) was Terry Rozier (30 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) and LaMelo Ball (24 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists).
