Two teams will pursue unbeaten seasons when the Gaston County Conference’s boys and girls championship games are played on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

The girls championship on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Ashbrook High gymnasium, Holbrook (11-0) looks to extend its winning streak to 25 games and complete a second straight unbeaten season when it faces Belmont (9-2).

Holbrook became the 20th unbeaten girls team in league history last season and second in the Lions’ school history; Holbrook was 15-0 in 1988.

The boys championship on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Huss High gymnasium, Southwest (11-0) seeks its first unbeaten season since 2010 and fourth overall when it faces Holbrook (9-2).

The Roadrunners are seeking to become the 17th unbeaten boys team in league history; Southwest’s previous unbeaten seasons came in 1983 (14-0), 1995 (13-0) and 2010 (12-0).

Western Foothills 3A Conference championship winners the East Lincoln girls and the Hickory boys led the all-league selections in voting done by conference coaches.

East Lincoln’s girls, which advanced to the Western N.C. 3A finals, had four selections in Ginny Overbay, Hailey McFadden, Emma Montanari and Madison Self with McFadden taking league player of the year honors.

North Iredell’s Brandon Jolly got the other superlative award as coach of the year.

Travel Basketball

The Denver Nuggets Travel boys’ basketball teams will be holding tryouts for the following teams: 7th-8th Grade Boys Monday, March 20th, Thursday, March 23rd, and Monday, March 27th from 6:00-7:30 PM in the competition gym at East Lincoln High School (6471 Hwy 73 Denver, NC 28037). 9th-11th grade boys have the same dates 7:30-9:00 PM. Players need to be at all 3 tryout dates if possible.
