It was a tough day for Lincoln County’s state championship basketball hopefuls on Saturday.

East Lincoln’s girls saw their title hopes and pursuit of an unbeaten season vanquished in a 49-42 Western 3A finals loss to West Rowan at the McDowell High School gymnasium.
Coach Jason Otey’s finishes 31-1 and with the second-best finish in school history; The 1973 Mustangs won the N.C. Open classification state title and the 1979 team also lost in the state semifinals.
And Lincoln Charter’s boys saw its 18-game winning streak stopped by Reidsville in their Western 2A finals 77-57 victory at the Greensboro Grimsley High School gymnasium.
Coach James Burnett’s team, which started the season 7-11, finished 25-12 overall and with the Eagles’ third-best finish in school history; Lincoln Charter won the 2017 N.C. 1A title, finished runner-up in 2021 and has been Western N.C. 1A runner-up in 2016 and 2018 and Western N.C. 2A runner-up in 2023.
Meanwhile in the area, Myers Park toppled North Mecklenburg 72-51 for the Western 4A title to advance to its first state championship game since 1966 and Central Cabarrus defeated West Charlotte 78-51 for the Western 3A title to advance to its first championship game since 2000.
Myers Park has been N.C. 4A runner-up in 1961 and 1966 and Central Cabarrus was 2000 3A state champion.
