3-31-22 roundup: Pro basketball and soccer, College football, basketball and baseball, High school baseball and softball, Middle school baseball and girls soccer

By Richard Walker

Back-to-back nail-biting wins over South Point this week have extended Crest’s conference winning streak to 35 games as well put the Chargers in first place of the Big South 3A Conference standings.

As rain wiped away all area games on Thursday, the Chargers (9-3, 6-0) are idle until hosting North Gaston on Tuesday.

Kings Mountain (6-2, 5-0) can pull into a tie for the league lead with a win over visiting Forestview on Friday.

In the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference, Burns (9-1, 5-0) has a chance to sweep its regular season series with Cherryville on Friday night on the road. Cheryville (7-3, 4-1) could forge a tie with Burns and give East Gaston (8-4, 6-1) a chance for sole possession of first place; East Gaston hosts Highland Tech on Friday night.

In Lincoln County, East Lincoln (7-2, 4-2) visits North Lincoln (8-1, 5-1) as both teams try to stay close behind Western Foothills 3A leader St. Stephens (10-1, 6-0) and Lincoln Charter (9-1, 2-1) visits Pine Lake Prep (8-1, 3-0) in hopes of forging a tie for first place in the Catawba Shores 1A/2A.

Former Mountain Island Charter standout and current Gaston County high school record-holder Aapri Washington is looking for a home to complete his college career after entering the transfer portal.

Aapri Washington (3) celebrates a big defensive play at Buffalo.

A 2017 Mountain Island Charter graduate, Washington rushed for 3,204 career yards (2,767 at MIC) and is the only Gaston County product to surpass 400 yards rushing in a single game when he picked up 402 against Hickory Grove Christian on Oct. 15, 2015.

At Buffalo, Washington had 95 tackles (four for losses with one quarterback sack), four interceptions and 12 pass deflections during his career. That included helping the Bulls defeat the Charlotte 49ers 31-9 in the 2019 Bahamas Bowl that remains Charlotte’s only postseason appearance.
