3-3-23 roundup: Pro basketball and soccer, High school basketball, baseball and softball, Middle school basketball, College basketball and baseball
By Richard Walker
The two remaining area state playoff basketball hopefuls took as different a paths as you can take to reach today’s regional finals.

But East Lincoln’s girls and Lincoln Charter’s boys are one step away from a March 11 date in their respective state championship games.
East Lincoln’s girls entered the season with high expectations after going 28-2 a year ago and advancing to the third round of the 3A playoffs.
And coach Jason Otey’s team has delivered – and then some – with a 31-0 unbeaten start that includes a 35.9 average win margin and impressive victories over teams in 4A, 3A and 2A classifications as it faces West Rowan for the Western N.C. 3A title on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the McDowell County High gymnasium.
The Mustangs have five top players in sophomore Hailey McFadden (11.1 scoring average, 6.8 rebounding average), freshman Emma Montanari (11.1 scoring average, 3.9 rebounding average, 3.0 assist average), freshman Kiara Anderson (10.9 scoring average, 3.4 rebounding average, 4.0 assist average), senior Madison Self (9.0 scoring average, 7.7 rebounding average) and senior Ginny Overbay (8.8 scoring average, 6.0 rebounding average).
They’ve won their four playoff games by a 22.5 average scoring margin and have played only three games decided by 10 or less points the whole season.
Meanwhile, Lincoln Charter played possibly the state’s most challenging schedule, started out 7-11 before winning 18 straight games to advance to the Western N.C. 2A final against Reidsville on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Greensboro Grimsley High gymnasium.
All 11 of the losses suffered by coach James Burnett’s team have come against eventual state playoff teams, among them eventual N.C. Independent Schools’ 4A semifinalist Providence Day, 3A runner-up Concord Academy, 3A semifinalist Gaston Christian and 2A semifinalist Gaston Day and N.C. 2A third round participant West Caldwell.
In the playoffs, the Eagles have won by 30, 33, 3 and 16 and the 3-point win came at top-seeded North Surry in a game in which Lincoln Charter once trailed by 20 points.

Junior Kelan Flowers (18.1 scoring average, 4.1 rebounding average, 3.4 assist average), senior Elijah Burnett (17.3 scoring average, 4.4 rebounding average, 6.1 assist average), senior Xavier Crawford (11.9 scoring average, 4.1 rebounding average, 2.0 assist average) and sophomore Joseph Bruce (6.1 scoring average) lead the Eagles’ balanced attack.
