3-29-23 roundup: Pro basketball, football and soccer, High school baseball, softball and track, College basketball, Middle school baseball and soccer

By Richard Walker

Intrigue continues about the upcoming Carolina Panthers No. 1 overall pick for the April 27-29 NFL Draft in Kansas City, Mo.

New Panthers head coach Frank Reich added to the rumor mill with his comments on Tuesday at the NFL League Meetings.

After large Carolina team contingents went to the NFL Pro Days for the top two NFL quarterback prospects – Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young – Reich offered interest in Florida’s Anthony Richardson just two days before his Florida Pro Day.

“He’s an exciting player,” Reich told media members. “Even before the combine, watching his tape, there are plays and throws all over the tape that screams top pick top of the draft pick, that’s a credit to him. I think he has upper-body mechanics that are really solid. Obviously, his completion percentage is lower than you want at this level, but I don’t get too discouraged with things like that.

Reich also added the kind of comment that leads many to believe he is truly interested in Richardson.

“I see a lot of upside talking to him a little bit at the combine,” Reich said. “You can tell how smart of a guy he is and a guy like that the more experience he gets he’s a guy you feel is going to get better fast.”

During his time at Florida, Richardson began the season as a starter only in 2022. In 12 games, he threw for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions and rushed for 654 yards and nine touchdowns.
