It’s amazing what a difference week can make in the NCAA tournament.

Just a week ago, many writers who cover major college conferences not named the ACC were celebrating the league’s apparent demise.

Longtime power North Carolina was being criticized for declining a NIT appearance.

Virginia and N.C. State lost in the opening round of the tournament and Duke and Pittsburgh lost in the second round.

Also, both NIT participants – Clemson and Virginia Tech – suffered first round exits.

Only Miami survived the first weekend to keep the league’s long streak of consecutive Sweet 16 appearances alive at 44 straight seasons.

But the Hurricanes, an ACC member since 2004, not only saved the league’s longest streak of NCAA tournament excellence. The Hurricanes went on to knock off No. 1 seed Houston in the regional semifinals then rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to beat Texas to earn the school’s first Final Four appearance in history.

Miami will be joined in the 2023 Final Four by Connecticut of the Big East, Florida Atlantic of Conference USA and San Diego State of the Mountain West.

What it means is that the ACC is the only school in the Power 5 conferences in this year’s Final Four as no teams from the Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12 or Southeastern made the Final Four.

The Hurricanes also become the 13th school of the ACC’s 17 teams to make a Final Four appearance – and ninth to do it as an ACC school.

The all-time leaders are North Carolina (21), Duke (17), Louisville (10), Syracuse (6), N.C. State (3), Virginia (3), Georgia Tech (2), former member Maryland (2), Florida State (1), Notre Dame (1), Pittsburgh (1) and Wake Forest (1). Boston College, Clemson, Virginia Tech never made the Final Four and former member South Carolina failed to do when it was an ACC school.

In the league’s 69-year history, the league has had at least one Final Four team in 42 seasons. The last year the league didn’t have a Final team was 2018 when both Duke and Florida State were beaten in regional finals.

Wracked by injuries and listed as double digit underdogs again, the Charlotte Hornets knocked off the playoff contending Dallas Mavericks for the second time in three days in a 110-104 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 19,264 at Spectrum Center on Sunday afternoon.

Gordon Hayward (22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), P.J. Washington (21 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists), Mark Williams (15 points, 16 rebounds) and Dennis Smith Jr. (14 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists) led Charlotte, which overcame All-Star Luka Doncic’s 40-point effort for Dallas (36-39).
