Bessemer City’s Randall Pettus has been named N.C. 1A public high school player of the year and Class 1A first team all-state by hoopseen.com.

A junior guard, Pettus averaged 26.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists for the Yellow Jackets this season as they advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1995.
Bessemer City finished 23-5 overall and shared the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A regular season title with Shelby.
Pro soccer
History was made at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Saturday night.
Major League Soccer expansion team Charlotte FC took its first-ever victory, 3-1 over the New England Revolution, as Karol Swiderski scored two goals and Ben Bender one.
Swiderski scored in the sixth minute, then tallied a second goal three minutes after New England tied the score at 1 in the 54th minute.
Charlotte FC (1-3) plays again next Saturday at 6 p.m. at home against Cincinnati.

College baseball
Gaston College 16, USC Lancaster 4: The Rhinos banged out 18 hits, including a season-high five by Miller St. John, in a game shortened to eight innings by the 10-run mercy rule. The Rhinos (22-1) host USC Lancaster on Sunday at 2 p.m. in their first regular season game at Gastonia’s Sims Legion Park after the facility has undergone recent renovations.
Pro basketball
The Charlotte Hornets appear to be picking the right time to be playing their best basketball.
They routed the Dallas Mavericks 129-108 on Saturday for Charlotte’s fourth straight win of the season to improve to 36-35 overall.
It ties for the second-longest winning streak of the year – the Hornets won four straight from Jan. 5-12 – and Charlotte has a chance to match a season-high five-game winning streak on Monday at 7 p.m. against New Orleans.
In Saturday’s victory, Charlotte trailed only briefly and led by as many as 32 points before taking a 21-point victory.
Miles Bridges (23 points, 8 rebounds), P.J. Washington (21 points), Terry Rozier (18 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists), LaMelo Ball (17 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists), Kelly Oubre (17 points, 6 rebounds), Montrezl Harrell (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Isaiah Thomas (11 points0 led the Hornets.
