3-17-22 roundup: College basketball, High school baseball, softball and track, Pro basketball and soccer
By Richard Walker
One of Gaston County’s oldest sporting events will return after two years away due to the coronavirus pandemic as the Gaston County Baseball Championship returns in April to Gastonia’s Sims Legion Park.
Started in 1987, the event will enter its 34th season with an eight-team field from among its 10 Gaston County high schools.
Host school Ashbrook will be joined by Bessemer City, Cramer, East Gaston, Forestview, Highland Tech, Huss and North Gaston; Cherryville and South Point won’t be playing in this year’s event but will return in 2023.
South Point had won the most previous titles (8) and Forestview is the defending champion with a 2-1 title-game victory over Ashbrook in 2019.
