The Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team has been invited to take part in the 2023 Discount Tire College Basketball Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The 16-team tournament begins on Saturday at the Ocean Center.
Charlotte (18-14) is a No. 3 seed and will face No. 14 Western Carolina in its opening round game on March 18 at 5:30 p.m. The winner advances to face the winner of Saturday’s No. 6 Stetson-No. 11 Milwaukee winner on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
The No. 1 seed in the tournament is Indiana State.
It is the 49ers first appearance in the CBI and the program’s 19th postseason appearance in history that includes 11 NCAA appearances and seven NIT appearances. It is Charlotte’s first postseason appearance since losing to Providence in the 2013 NIT first round.
Coach Ron Sanchez’s team has been led this season by its All-Conference USA trio in second teamer Brice Williams and honorable mention selections Lu’Cye Patterson and Aly Khalifa.
Williams led the team with 13.4 points and added 5.0 rebounds per game, while finishing second in C-USA Sixth Player of the Year voting. Khalifa averaged 11.9 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds and Patterson led the team in assists in 2.9 per game and averaged 9.8 points and 3.4 rebounds.

Travel Basketball
The Denver Nuggets Travel boys’ basketball teams will be holding tryouts for the following teams: 7th-8th Grade Boys Monday, March 20th, Thursday, March 23rd, and Monday, March 27th from 6:00-7:30 PM in the competition gym at East Lincoln High School (6471 Hwy 73 Denver, NC 28037). 9th-11th grade boys have the same dates 7:30-9:00 PM. Players need to be at all 3 tryout dates if possible.

Hall of Fame
The 2023 Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame will hold induction ceremonies on May 22 at the Gastonia Conference Center.
University of North Carolina head football coach Mack Brown will be the featured speaker for the 5 p.m. event.
GCSHOF inductees for the 2023 class are Dallas’ Chastity Friday, Gastonia’s Bill Eccles and Chuck Niemeyer, Stanley’s Doyt Morris and John Rudisill. (Stories on each inductee will be posted on www.CarolinasSportsHub.com in the coming months.)
Additionally, the GCSHOF will host a golf fundraiser on Friday, May 19 at Lincoln Country Club.
Tickets are $40 each for the banquet and can be bought at the following locations – Medical Center Pharmacy and Essic Sport Shop in Gastonia, Penley & Associates in Dallas and South State Bank in Stanley.
