The NCAA men’s basketball tournament field was announced on Sunday and five ACC teams, nearby Davidson and three teams with local connections in the 68-team field.

Former Ashbrook High standout Isaiah Whaley is in the NCAA as a member of the Connecticut Huskies.

ACC champion Virginia Tech, which became the first No. 7 seed to win the tournament when it knocked off top-seeded Duke 82-67 on Saturday, is the No. 11 seed in the East region. Duke is No. 2 in the West, North Carolina No. 8 in the East, Miami No. 10 in the Midwest and Notre Dame No. 11 in the West.

Davidson is No. 10 in the West.

And former Gardner-Webb head coach Chris Holtman’s Ohio State team is No. 7 in the South, former Belmont Abbey head coach Billy Taylor is an assistant coach for Midwest No. 5 Iowa and former Ashbrook High star Isaiah Whaley is a senior forward for West No. 5 Connecticut.

Pro golf

Gastonia’s Harold Varner III is one shy off the lead in the PGA’s oft-postponed THE PLAYERS Championship entering Monday’s final day.

A 2008 Forestview High graduate, Varner is at eight-under par through nine holes in the third round of an event whose opening round last 55 houts and 16 minutes and a two-round cut wasn’t made until Sunday.

The leader is Anirban Lahiri at nine-under par.

Charlotte FC suffered a heartbreaking loss when the Atlanta United scored a goal in extra time to snap a 1-all tie and drop Charlotte 0-3 in its inagural season.

A crowd of 43,055 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium did see Charlotte history as Adam Armour scored the franchise’s first goal off a Benjamin Bender assist in the 66th minute.
