Middle school basketball

Both defending champions are in the field of the 2023 Gaston County Conference middle school basketball championship playoffs that begin on Thursday.

Holbrook’s girls enter the tournament with a chance to move into fourth place in all-time win streaks.

The unbeaten Lions (10-0) have won 23 straight games and a Thursday semifinal win over No. 4 seed W.C. Friday (7-3) would pass Grier’s 23-game winning streak from 2018 to 2019. And two more wins – the Gaston County Conference title game is Tuesday – would leave them behind only W.C. Friday (36 straight wins from 2013 to 2016), Stanley (33 from 1992-94) and Chavis (27 from 2000-02) in Gaston County Junior High/Middle School girls basketball history.

The other girls semifinal on Thursday has No. 3 seed Southwest (8-2) at No. 2 Belmont (8-2).

Southwest’s boys are unbeaten (10-0) for the second straight regular season and will host No. 1 Mount Holly (7-3).

Defending champion Belmont (8-2), which upset Southwest 52-42 in last year’s title game, is the No. 2 seed and hosts No. 3 Holbrook (8-2) in Thursday’s other boys semifinal.

The boys winners advance to the 2023 title game on March 8.

Pro basketball

On a day the Charlotte Hornets announced a season-ending injury for former All-Star guard LaMelo Ball, they also saw their season-long five-game winning streak in a 105-91 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Kevin Durant made his debut for the Suns with 23 points and 6 rebounds in 27 minutes of a contest Phoenix never trailed.

Kelly Oubre (26 points, 9 rebounds), Terry Rozier (20 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Gordon Hayward (15 points) and Mark Williams (11 points, 10 rebounds) led Charlotte.

Earlier on Wednesday, the team announced Ball had undergone successful surgery “to address a fracture in his right ankle.” Ball was in the third quarter of Monday’s 117-106 win over Detroit and marks the third time he’s suffered foot troubles this season; Ball has previously missed 27 games this season with a left ankle sprain that he suffered in a preseason game.

The third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Ball has appeared in 162 games (142 starts) in his three-year career and averaged 19.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 31.8 minutes per game. He earned the first All-Star nod of his career in 2021-22, becoming the fourth-youngest All-Star in NBA history. Ball was named the NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 15.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 2020-21.

This season, Ball is averaging 23.3 points, 6.4 rebound, 8.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 35.2 minutes in 36 games.
