College basketball
The basketball community in two states is mourning the loss of former Davidson College scholar-athlete, men’s basketball coach and Director of Athletics Terry Holland, who who passed away Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.
Also a future Virginia basketball coach and East Carolina athletic director, Holland was 80 years old.
A top recruit out of his hometown of Clinton, N.C., Holland was Hall of Fame basketball coach Lefty Driesell’s first freshman recruit at Davidson and went on to finish his career ranked in the top five in scoring and rebounding. Among his Wildcats’ teammate were future Gaston County Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Bill Jarman.
After graduation in 1964 when he led Davidson to a 22-4 overall record and Davidson’s first top 10 national ranking, Holland was Driesell’s assistant for five years from the 1964-65 to 1968-69 seasons. In those five seasons, the Wildcats won four Southern Conference championships.
When Driesell left Davidson to coach at Maryland, Holland was his replacement and continued the winning tradition with a 92-43 record, earned league coach of the year three times and guided the Wildcats to a pair of postseason appearances, Holland also left the school for the ACC.
He became Virginia head coach and led the Cavaliers to a 326-173 record in 16 seasons with eight NCAA appearances highlighted by two Final Four appearances and was NIT champion in 1980.
After returning to Davidson at athletic director from 1990 to 1994, he would also serve in that same position at Virginia (1994-2001) and East Carolina (2004-13).
In January 2022, Davidson College honored Holland and Driesell and retired Holland’s No. 42 jersey.
