2-26-23 roundup: Pro basketball and soccer, High school basketball, baseball and softball, Middle school basketball, College basketball and baseball

Gardner-Webb’s women’s basketball team completed a historic run through the Big South Conference on Saturday.

Gardner-Webb celebrates its Big South Conference championship.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs defeated USC Upstate 83-58 on “Senior Day” to complete the first 18-0 run through the league by a men’s team or women’s team in Big South Conference history.

In fact, only seven other team finished with unbeaten league records – women’s teams from Radford (1989, 1990), Campbell (1991) and Liberty (1998) went 12-0, Liberty (2003 and 2004) went 14-0 and Winthrop’s men went 14-0 in 2007 – in the Big South’s 37-year history.

At 26-4 and with losses only to Clemson of the ACC, Alabama of the SEC, SMU of the American Athletic Conference and Appalachian State of the Sun Belt Conference, Gardner-Webb coach Alex Simmons has guided the Bulldogs to their best regular season record in school history.

Gardner-Webb enters this week’s Big South tournament at Charlotte’s Bojangles’ Arena as the favorite to wrap up its second NCAA appearances in history; The Bulldogs won the Big South tournament as a No. 3 seed in 2011.

Before Saturday’s victory, seven seniors were honored – Ki’Ari Cain of Sumter, S.C, Lauren Bevis of High Point, L’Mia Littlejohn of Shelby, Sarah Matthews of Atlanta, Christina Deng of Aweil, South Sudan, Grace Knutsen of Alpharetta, Ga., and Jhesskya Williams of Augusta, Ga.

In Saturday’s win, Bevis had 30 points and Williams 28 for Gardner-Webb.

Gardner-Webb next competes in the Big South Tournament on Thursday in an 11:30 a.m. game against Wednesday’s Winthrop-UNC Asheville winner.

Charlotte Hornets president of basketball operations and general manager Mitch Kupchak announced Sunday his team has signed guard Bryce McGowens to a reported four-year, $7.4 million contract.

The Hornets acquired McGowens, who was originally selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round (40th overall) of the 2022 NBA Draft, via a draft night trade in exchange for Josh Minott and a 2023 second-round draft pick. McGowens signed his first contract with Charlotte on July 2, 2022.

McGowens has appeared in 26 games (one start) for the Hornets this season, averaging 4.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 14.7 minutes per game. In 10 total games with the Greensboro Swarm across the G League Showcase and regular season, McGowens has posted 22.4 points (43.7 FG%, 82.8 FT%), 4.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 35.4 minutes per game.

McGowens averaged 16.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 33.3 minutes per game across 31 contests (31 starts) in his lone season at Nebraska (2021-22). He earned All-Big Ten Third Team and Big Ten All-Freshman honors, in addition to being named the Big Ten Newcomer of the Year.
