2-21-22 roundup: College basketball, High school basketball, Pro basketball, Middle school basketball

By Richard Walker

On a weekend in which Gastonia’s James Worthy was honored as one of the NBA’s 75 greatest players as the league celebrates its 75th anniversary, the Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball and former Charlotte Christian and Davidson star Stephen Curry big weekends.

James Worthy (left) posted a photo of himself and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on twitter as they were on an airplane bound for last weekend’s NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ball, a second-year Hornets player, was a reserve for the Team Durant team that lost 163-160 to team James. The 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year, Ball had 18 points, three rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes.

It was the second-highest single-game scoring total for a Hornets’ player in the All-Star game – and only behind 1997 MVP Glen Rice, who scored 26 points.

Curry, a 2006 Charlotte Christian graduate, scored a game-high 50 points on 17 of 30 overall shooting (16-27 on 3-pointers) and also had five rebounds and two assists to earn MVP honors.

At halftime of the All-Star Game at Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage Arena, Curry also was one of 75 players honored as the league’s greatest players in honor of its 75th anniversary this season.

Also honored were Worthy, Hornets owner Michael Jordan, former Hornets head coach Dave Cowens and former Hornets assistant Patrick Ewing.

Eight N.C. high school products were honored – Curry of Charlotte Christian, Sam Jones of Laurinburg Institute, Jordan of Wilmington Laney, Pete Maravich of Raleigh Broughton, Bob McAdoo of Greensboro Smith, Chris Paul of West Forsyth, Dominique Wilkins of Washington and Worthy of Ashbrook.

And two S.C. high school products were honored – Ray Allen Dalzell Hillcrest and Maravich, whose prep career began at Daniel High in Central, S.C., before he finished up his career at Raleigh Broughton in N.C.

The complete list of players is in alphabetical order below:
