Cramer’s Charlie Sly was a superlative award from Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln counties area on Saturday as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) concluded its 87th annual individual wrestling state tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The event ended with four team champions and 56 individual champions in the state’s four classifications.

Sly, a two-time state champion, was named the most outstanding wrestler in Class 3A after completing an unbeaten season in the 132-pound weight class.

Sly is one of five area individual state champions. The others are his Cramer teammates Bently Sly (120-pound class) and Matt Karagias (160) in 3A and Burns’ John David Curtis (145) and West Lincoln’s Mason Avery (182).

In all, wrestlers from Burns, Crest and Kings Mountain of Cleveland County, Bessemer City, Cherryville, Cramer, East Gaston and North Gaston of Gaston County, Lincolnton, West Lincoln of Lincoln County and Thomas Jefferson which draws its student-athletes from Cleveland and Rutherford counties accounted for 24 top six individual finishes.

Schools with multiple finishers were led by Lincolnton (4), Cherryville (3), Cramer (3), West Lincoln (3), Burns (2), East Gaston (2), Kings Mountain (2) and North Gaston (2).
