New Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich will have one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the NFL after hiring former Wake Forest, Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell as a senior assistant and former Detroit Lions running backs coach and assistant head coach Duce Staley.
Caldwell will report directly to Reich and will help the team on offense, defense, and special teams.
Caldwell, 68, was one of nine coaches to interview for the Panthers’ head coaching opening and the third of those nine to join the staff. Reich was hired as head coach and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero also was hired.
Reich and Caldwell has a long history together as Caldwell was assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach under Tony Dungy when Reich was a coaching intern with the Colts in 2006 – or the same year the Colts won a Super Bowl.
Caldwell has a 62-50 record as head coach in seven seasons with four playoff appearances including a Super Bowl loss with the Colts. Caldwell also won a Super Bowl ring as offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.
Staley is a Columbia, S.C., native who played running back at South Carolina before a 10 year NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles (1997-2003) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2004-06). He coached 10 years for the Eagles and the last two years for the Lions.
