The boys and girls basketball teams from Gaston Christian and Gaston Day got their N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoff pairings on Sunday.

Gaston Christian’s boys, who lost in the 3A title game last season, are a No. 5 seed in the 2022 Class 3A tournament and received a bye on Tuesday. The Eagles (12-13) will host the winner of Tuesday’s Calvary Day (9-19) at Hickory Grove Christian (7-17) on Thursday.

Gaston Day’s boys are a No. 2 seed in the 2022 Class 2A tournament and the Spartans (24-3) host Hickory Christian Academy (8-11) on Tuesday. Gaston Day would host a Thursday playoff game if it wins on Tuesday.

Gaston Christian’s girls (4-9) are an unseeded 3A team and will play at league rival Hickory Grove Christian (8-10) in a Tuesday first round game.

And Gaston Day’s girls (3-14) are an unseeded 2A team and will play at No. 4 Statesville Christian (15-5) on Tuesday.

Gaston College 81, Denmark Tech 71: The Rhinos were led by a balanced attack of Jaylen Bates (17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), DaMarco Watson (15 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals), Dee Merriweather (14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Zavion Jackson (12 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals), Damon Davis (9 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals), Joshua Johnson (8 points) and Kalil Camara (6 points, 4 rebounds) in their Region 10 home victory at North Gaston High School.

 

 

 

 

College baseball

Gaston College 8, Wake Tech 5: The Rhinos completed a three-game series sweep to improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Region 10. In the win, J.D. Yakubinis led a patient offense with a pair two-out hits that produced four RBIs. Yakubinis hit a two-run first-inning home run that gave Gaston College an early 2-0 lead, then added a two-out single in the seventh to make it 8-4.
