Two Gaston County high school boys basketball teams celebrated huge accomplishments on Friday as Cherryville’s Scott Harrill became the county’s first 400-game coaching winner and Gaston Day won its conference tournament title.
Cherryville ended its regular season with a 58-51 victory over Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy as Harrill improved his 22-year head coaching record to 400-179. Harrill in the 2020-21 season became Gaston County’s all-time basketball head coaching winner.
At Gaston Day, the Spartans avenged one of their three regular season losses with a 46-44 win over visiting Northside Christian in the Metrolina Athletic Conference tournament title game.

Apparently, just playing the Detroit Pistons simply brings out the best in the Charlotte Hornets.
Charlotte put an end to its season-long six-game losing streak with a 141-119 victory at Detroit on Friday.
The win extended the Hornets’ franchise-record winning streak to 15 games over the Pistons.
LaMelo Ball (31 points, 5 rebounds, 12 assists), Terry Rozier (25 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists), Miles Bridges (25 points), Kelly Oubre (11 points, 6 rebounds), Mason Plumlee (7 points, 10 rebounds) and new acquisition Montrezl Harrell (15 points, 6 rebounds) led the Hornets, who led all but a few minutes of the first quarter in the 22-point victory.
Harrell, acquired from the Washington Wizards on Thursday, played 22 minutes in his first game for Charlotte.
Rozier’s triple-double was the first of his Hornets’ career, made him the 11th player in team history to record a triple-double and makes him and Ball the fourth pair of Charlotte teammates with triple-doubles in the same season; Stephen Jackson and Boris Diaw (2010-11), Baron Davis and Jamal Mashburn (2000-01) and Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill (1995-96) previous did so.
