By Richard Walker
The Gastonia Honey Hunters announced Tuesday on twitter that they have re-signed former Forestview High standout Reilly Hovis.

A 2012 Forestview graduate, Hovis was on the Honey Hunters roster for a month last season before the right-handed was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization as part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball’s arrangement with the Major Leagues; Another local product, 2007 North Gaston High graduate Jake Buchanan was signed off the Gastonia roster before the season began by the California Angels.
Hovis went 1-2 with a 2.96 ERA in six appearances (three starts) for Gastonia before going 2-4 with a 6.53 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts) for the Blue Jays’ Class AA New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
A standout at Forestview before helping North Carolina to the 2013 ACC title and earning All-ACC honors in 2014, Hovis spent four years in the Miami Marlins’ organization after they selected him in the ninth round of the 2015 major league draft.
The Honey Hunters, who went 54-66 in their inaugural season of 2021, open their 2022 season at home on April 21.
High school wrestling
West Lincoln (19-3) faces host Bandys in the Western 2A wrestling quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The Rebels, who advanced with wins over Surry Central and R-S Central on Monday, would face the winner of Wednesday’s Newton-Conover vs. Trinity quarterfinal if it beats Bandys for a berth in the state final.
The state championship matches are Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum Field House.
