12-29-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school basketball and football, College football and basketball

By Richard Walker

The 21st Duke’s Mayo Bowl will be played Friday at noon at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.

Longtime rivals Maryland and N.C. State will meet for the first time since 2013 in the 2022 renewal of the postseason game.

The ACC takes a 10-10 record into the contest – and hasn’t won since 2018 – while the Big Ten is unbeaten at 1-0 by virtue of Wisconsin’s 42-28 victory over Wake Forest in 2020.

N.C. State is 2-1 in previous games, winning in 2005 and 2011 and losing in 2015. Maryland is making its first appearance.

Gameday: Maryland Terrapins (7-5) vs. N.C. State Wolfpack (8-4), Noon on Friday at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium

TV: ESPN (Anish Shroff, Brock Osweiler, Andraya Carter)

RADIO: FM 95.7 in Hickory is N.C. State affiliate (Gary Hahn, Johnny Evans, Tony Haynes)

Carolina Panthers quarterback P.J. Walker is the 2022 winner of the Tom Berry Good Guy Award, which annually honors the Panthers player who was most helpful to the media.

Walker is in his third season with the Panthers and the award is presented by the Carolinas chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America and named for a longtime columnist and Panthers beat writer for the High Point Enterprise who died at the start of the 2009 season.

Walker started five games for the Panthers in Weeks six through 10 and completed 72.7 percent of his passes and tossed two touchdowns in a 21-3 win over Tampa Bay in Week 7.

PFWA members said they appreciated that Walker was accessible beyond what was required of him, taking time to speak with reporters 1-on-1 at his locker after practices and games. Walker also was available to the media after the firing of Matt Rhule, his coach at Temple, and the trade of Robbie Anderson, his college teammate.
