College basketball

Gardner-Webb 77, Georgia 60: Gardner-Webb led for all but 24 seconds Wednesday night before taking its largest margin of victory over a Power-5 conference opponent. The previous record was 16 points in an 84-68 win at Kentucky on Nov. 7, 2007. The win was the first over a Power-5 conference opponent since at Wake Forest on Dec. 29, 2018 and it was the first win over a SEC opponent since that Kentucky victory.

Gardner-Webb’s Lance Terry drives to the basket against Georgia.

The Bulldogs (6-7) led by as many as 21 points in the second half. Lance Terry, Zion Williams and Jordan Sears led Gardner-Webb with 14 points apiece in a game it trailed for the last time at 4-3.
Gardner-Webb is off until its Jan. 5 Big South Conference opener at Charleston Southern.

Charlotte 49ers: The men’s and women’s basketball teams Conference USA openers this weekend against FAU and FIU have been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols among the participating teams. All six squads will work to find potential make up dates for the four postponed games.
The 49ers men, who were scheduled to face FAU and FIU on the road on Thursday and Saturday, will return to action next weekend Jan. 8 against Old Dominion at 4 p.m. And the 49ers women, who were scheduled to host FAU and FIU on Thursday and Saturday, will also return to action on Jan. 8 at Old Dominion at 2 p.m.

When the Carolina Panthers were off to a 3-0 start earlier this season, new starting quarterback Sam Darnold appeared poised for a solid season.

Now, Darnold just wants to give himself – and his team – a strong finish to the season after Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule named Darnold the starter for Sunday’s game at New Orleans.

“I’m really focused on this week, to be completely honest with you,” Darnold said Wednesday. “I’m focused on New Orleans and focusing on what we can do to win this ball game on Sunday.
“If I look past this game at all, I would be doing this team and myself a disservice by looking too far in the future. I don’t want to do that. I want to put my best football forward for this team so that we can go out and win this Sunday. If I go out and start to worry about what these next couple of games mean and what the implications are for next year, that does nothing for me on Sunday.”

Carolina lost five of its last six starts under Darnold earlier this season to slip to 4-5.

After starter P.J. Walker and backup Cam Newton led the team to a 34-10 blowout win at Arizona, Carolina has lost five straight games with Newton as the starter.

Darnold replaced Newton during last Sunday’s 32-6 home loss to Tampa Bay.

Rhule said he felt Darnold’s performance in a 26-7 home win over New Orleans on Sept. 19 was “probably his best game of the season.”

“So it’s a good opportunity for him to see, here’s what I looked like then, I’ve gone through a lot of growth, a lot of ups and downs, where am I at right now,” Rhule added.

Darnold threw for 305 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in the win over the Saints that was the second win of three straight victories to open the season.

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ 2021 schedule (with results):

Sept. 12 New York Jets (W 19-14)
