12-28-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school basketball and football, College football and basketball
By Richard Walker
A year ago, Jaylen Bates set Gaston College history as the school’s first All-Region 10 selection since the school restarted its athletic program after 50 years.

On Thursday, now a starting forward at Florida A&M University, Bates will be on the biggest stage in college basketball when he the Rattlers visit No. 1-ranked Purdue at 5 p.m. in a game televised on the Big Ten Network.
“It’s a challenge obviously,” said Bates, a 6-foot-7, 215-pounder from Atlanta who averaged 13.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season for the Rhinos. “We’re going up there trying to win.”
Already this season, Bates and Florida A&M have played a challenging schedule that has seen the Rattlers play Oregon and Oregon State of the PAC-10, Florida, Georgia and Kentucky of the SEC and Miami and Louisville of the ACC.
Entering Thursday’s game against Purdue, Bates is averaging 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game highlighted by a season-high 21 points last week in an 88-68 loss at Kentucky.
The Purdue game marks the third time this season the Rattlers have played a nationally-ranked team this season. Florida A&M opened at No. 21 Oregon, played at No. 19 Kentucky and Miami was unranked at the time of their meeting but the Hurricanes are now ranked No. 14.
“Coach McCullum knew that he was kind of putting us through the fire with this schedule,” said Bates, whose Rattlers were picked fifth in the preseason SWAC poll. “That way, when we go through our conference schedule, there’s nothing going to be anything we haven’t seen.”
A year ago, Bates was one of four sophomores – Kalil Camara, Damon Davis and Zavion Jackson were the others – who were considered cornerstones of then-head coach David “Dickey” Nutt and then-associate head coach Jamie Rosser’s start-up Gaston College program.
The Rhinos finished 18-10 overall, finished one game out of first place in the Region 10 standings and one of their losses was to eventual National Junior College Athletic Association champion Northwest Florida State.
Bates says he and his 2021-22 Gaston College teammates remain connected and frequently share their news with each other on a group text.
“We still have a group text going,” Bates said. ‘There’s still a strong relationship there. They helped me so much in my career.
“I’m always rooting for Gaston College. I’ll be a Rhino for life. I still tune in to the games.”
