12-27-23 roundup: Pro football and basketball, College football and basketball, High school basketball

By Richard Walker

North Carolina’s late season struggles continued as the short-handed Tar Heels lost 30-10 to West Virginia in front of 42,925 at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Wednesday in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Large contingent of West Virginia fans celebrating their 2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl Classic victory on Wednesday night at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.

The Tar Heels, without 12 players due to early entry or injury including future NFL first-round quarterback Drake Maye, yielded a 75-yard touchdown pass on the game’s first play from scrimmage and got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

The win made for a happy homecoming for 2023 East Lincoln High graduate Ben Cutter, who had 5 tackles for the Mountaineers (9-4).

The Tar Heels finished 8-5 overall with losses in five of their last seven games. This comes after UNC finished 9-5 last season after starting out 9-1.

For North Carolina, British Brooks (2018 Ashbrook graduate) had 57 yards on 3 carries highlighted by a 53-yard run, Malaki Hamrick (Shelby 2022) had 1 tackle and Spencer Triplett (Shelby 2020) played in his 12th game of the season.
