12-24-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school basketball, College football
By Richard Walker
Playing the coldest home game in franchise history, the Carolina Panthers resorted to “old school” football on Sunday against the Detroit Lions as they moved closer to an improbable NFC South Division title.

The Panthers rushed for a team-record 320 yards and amassed a team-record 570 total yards in a 37-23 victory that kept Carolina in control of its playoff fate.
One week after being limited to 21 yards on 16 carries in a 24-16 home loss to Pittsburgh Steelers, the Panthers rolled up 104 yards rushing on their first six carries in Sunday’s game and finished with a franchise record for yards in the opening half (364).
In the second half, D’Oonta Foreman’s 28-yard run late in the fourth quarter as the team was trying to put the game away gave the team its new records; Previously, the Panthers’ team rushing record was 299 against Tampa Bay in 2008 and the Panthers’ team total offense record was 548 against Miami in 2017.
The game was played under frigid conditions – 20 degrees at kickoff and a wind chill of 9 degrees.
It marks the third coldest game in Panthers’ franchise history – and the coldest home game in team history.
Foreman (165 yards with 1 TD) and Chuba Hubbard (125 yards) became the first Panthers’ teammates to rush for 100 yards in the same game since 2009. And quarterback Sam Darnold completed 15 of 22 passes for 250 yards and a TD throw to D.J. Moore and 19 yards rushing and one more TD.
The victory improved Carolina’s record to 3-9 in games in which the game time temperature is 32 degrees or lower.
It also means the Panthers will win the NFC South Division for the first time since 2015 if they win at Tampa Bay next week and at New Orleans on Jan. 8.
Here’s the full Carolina Panthers schedule for the 2022 season:

Playing with their projected starting lineup for the first time of the season suited the Charlotte Hornets just fine late Friday night as they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 134-130.
The result evened the Hornets’ record on the ongoing 6-game, 10-day West Coast road trip at 2-2 with two games left to play.
All five starters scored in double figures – guards LaMelo Ball (23 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists), Terry Rozier (23 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists), forwards Gordon Hayward (15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) and P.J. Washington (24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) and center Mason Plumlee (11 points, 8 rebounds) – and reserve Kelly Oubre had 19 points.
