12-24-21 roundup: College football, High school basketball, Pro football and basketball

By Richard Walker

If Sunday’s 1 p.m. game is Cam Newton’s last start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, there’s little that will change the notion many observers have that Newton is the greatest to ever play for the franchise.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Auburn, Newton holds franchise records for most quarterback starts (135), quarterback wins (71) and passing yards (29,664).

He’s also third in rushing yards (4,989) and fourth in scoring (382 points). He trails former teammates Jonathan Stewart (7,318) and Deangelo Williams (6,486) in rushing yards and trails John Kasay (1,482 points) and former teammates Graham Gano (742 points) and Steve Smith (454) in career scoring.

While he is currently seeking to snap a 12-game losing streak as Panthers’ starting quarterback, Newton’s 71-63-1 record puts him well ahead of second-place Jake Delhomme (58-40). Of the other 19 quarterbacks to start a game in Carolina history, only Steve Beuerlein (23-28) and Kerry Collins (22-21) have won nine or more games.

Ironically, the only perfect record of a Panthers’ quarterback in team history is held by current third-teammer P.J. Walker; Walker is 2-0 with a home win over the Detroit Lions in the 2020 season and a road win at the Arizona Cardinals earlier this season.

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ 2021 schedule (with results):

Sept. 12 New York Jets (W 19-14)
