12-23-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school basketball, College football
By Richard Walker
Based on their history, the Carolina Panthers’ biggest obstacle on Saturday in their 2022 home finale may not be the Detroit Lions.
It may be Mother Nature.
With a forecasted high temperature of 32, the Panthers will have to defy their history to pull off a victory as they’ve recorded a victory in games played with game time temperatures of 32 or lower is only 2-9 entering Sunday.
The most famous cold weather game in Carolina history also was its coldest and its first in such a circumstance as the Panthers lost 30-13 at the Green Bay Packers in the 1996 NFC title game. Game time temperature was 3 degrees on the famous “Frozen Tundra” of Lambeau Field.
Only once in those 11 games has Carolina been at home – a 23-10 win over the New Orleans Saints on Jan. 3, 2010 when the game time temperature was 30. That victory ended head coach John Fox’s next-to-last season with an 8-8 record.
The other Panthers’ win also came with Fox as head coach when the Panthers ground out a 13-6 win at the Cleveland Browns in a Dec. 1, 2002 contest with a game time temperature of 25.
Here’s the list of all Panthers’ games played with a game time temperature of 32 or lower:
3 degrees at Packers (1-12-1997 NFC championship game — L 13-30)
12 degrees at Vikings (11-30-2014 — L 13-31)

According to ESPN, the Charlotte Hornets and restricted free agent forward Miles Bridges are “gathering traction in talks on a new deal and optimism exists that an agreement could come in the relative near future.”
Whenever Bridges signs a contract with a new team, the sooner an expected NBA suspension can be determined for his domestic violence case.
Bridges pleaded no contest to a felony charge in November and received a sentence of three years probation with no jail time. According to ESPN sources, Bridges’ case remains under investigation by the league.
According to the report, Bridges and his representatives with Klutch Sports have been “in consistent contact with the Hornets organization.”
If Bridges doesn’t sign with the Hornets or any team, he would remain a restricted free agent in the summer of 2023.
The NBA suspended former Charlotte player Jeffrey Taylor 24 games in 2014 after he pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence assault. During his three-year probation, Bridges is required to complete 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling and 52 weeks of parenting classes and serve 100 hours of community service.
Bridges, 24, was considered a cornerstone Hornets’ player after averaging 20.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists last season.
Most NBA sources believed Bridges would sign an offer sheet for $100 million or more and Charlotte can match another team’s offer to retain him.
