12-21-22 roundup: Pro basketball, football and soccer, High school basketball, College football and basketball

By Richard Walker

Shelby’s Ally Hollifield scored 43 points to set a Cleveland County girls basketball single-game scoring record for the 5-on-5 rules era that started in 1969 in the Golden Lions’ 69-51 victory at rival Kings Mountain on Wednesday.

Her point total was two points more than her older sister Kate Hollifield’s school record of 41 points in a 2018 game against Lincolnton. Kings Mountain’s Saniya Wilson also had 41 points in a 2022 game against Ashbrook.

The all-time county record came when girls basketball used 6-on-6 rules; Waco’s Mary Kiser had 74 points in a 1951 game against Belwood.

East Lincoln 61, Statesville 12

Catawba Ridge 64, South Point 35

Boys results:

College football

The Charlotte 49ers and Gardner-Webb Bulldogs were happy with Wednesday early recruiting classes.

The 49ers under new head coach Biff Poggi added 28 players, including 19 with collegiate experience and 11 from the St. Frances Academy program in Baltimore that Poggi started.

And Gardner-Webb’s fourth-year head coach Tre Lamb signed 14 players after his school’s first Big South Conference title in 19 seasons and first Football Championship Series playoff appearance in school history.

Charlotte’s Poggi, who will remain on the University of Michigan staff until the Wolverines’ season is completed, has hired a coaching staff and recruited players for the 49ers since he was hired in late November.

“A really exciting day for us,” Poggi said in a school news release. “Lots of long days getting to today. I’m really pleased with how the staff has recruited. The response we’ve received has been amazing. I will say this – coaches don’t win games, players do, so you’ve got to have players. We want to build our football team around stopping the run on defense, running the football on offense and great special teams.”

“Our success on the field this season created opportunities for our coaching staff to get involved with a higher caliber recruit, and we closed on a very strong group,” Lamb said in a school news release. “We bring back the bulk of our roster for next season, but we do need to continue building and increasing our talent and expecations for Gardner-Webb football. We got better today. No doubt.”

Charlotte FC on Wednesday drafted four players in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, including first round pick Hamady Diop of NCAA national champion Clemson.

Diop was selected No. 1 overall after Charlotte FC traded up to $450K General Allocation Money (GAM) to St. Louis City SC in exchange for the top pick.

Charlotte FC later traded away $50K in 2023 GAM, an additional $50K GAM (if certain incentives are met) and the franchise’s 2024 first round selection to the Colorado Rapids for the No. 12 overall selection. Charlotte FC used that pick to draft Patrick Agyemang of the University of Rhode Island.

Charlotte FC selected Nick Scardina of the University of Washington in the second round at No. 40 overall and Andrew Privett of Penn State in the third round at No. 69 overall.
