When Ray Cloyd took over the Cramerton Middle School boys soccer program, the Eagles had won seven Gaston County Conference titles and had even recorded five unbeaten seasons.
After Cramerton’s 6-0 victory over Holbrook for the 2022 county title, the Eagles completed the most dominant season in county history, extended their county record winning streak and became all-time leader in county championships with 12.
Cloyd also told his team that he was retiring from coaching after that historic accomplishment.
“To do the job, it takes a lot of time,” Cloyd said. “I like to do a good job in the classroom so it can be hard to do both so I’ve decided it’s time for me to give up coaching.”
Cloyd’s boys soccer tenure concludes with an 87-12 record, a 45-game winning streak and five straight county titles.
Cramerton’s 2022 team outscored its 12 opponents by a staggering 93-4 goal differential as the Eagles surpassed Grier’s previous county record of 42 straight wins from 1992 to 1995.
“The kids were really talented and really unselfish,” Cloyd said. “They accepted their roles in our 4-4-2 diamond formation.”
Cloyd has also coached Cramerton to county titles in baseball (2016) and golf (2018) and led the girls soccer team to a 4-0 record in the abbreviated 2021 season.
“You’ve got to have players when you’re a part of something like this,” Cloyd said. “And you’ve got to have some luck. I try to motivate the kids as well and they kids have been great to work with over the years.
“I’ve been blessed to have some many talented, unselfish players.”

The Charlotte Hornets used a strong fourth quarter to stop an eight-game losing streak in Monday night’s 125-119 win at the Sacramento Kings.
Charlotte (8-23), which hadn’t won since Dec. 2, was on the second day and second game of a six-game, 10-day West Coast road trip.
Kelly Oubre (31 points, 9 rebounds), LaMelo Ball (23 points, 5 rebounds, 12 assists), Gordon Hayward (19 points, 5 rebounds) and Mason Plumlee (15 points) led the Hornets with Ball tallying 16 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter.
