12-11-21 roundup: High school football and basketball, Pro football and basketball, College football and basketball, Middle school wrestling

By Richard Walker

In an offensive shootout against North Carolina’s most prolific high school rushing attack in history, Shelby downed Wallace-Rose Hill 55-34 to win the 2021 N.C. 2A title at N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday.

Shelby celebrates the 2021 N.C. 2A state title at N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium.

It was Shelby’s 19th state in school history – and seventh championship in nine years.

Even after falling behind 7-0 and 21-14 in the first half, Shelby scored two touchdowns in the final 1:29 of the first half to take a 34-28 lead at the break. Then the Golden Lions scored the first 21 points of the second half to turn the game into a blowout victory.

Shelby finished 15-1 overall, losing only a non-conference game to eventual S.C. Class 4A state champion Rock Hill South Pointe.

Wallace-Rose Hill finished 13-3.

Shelby junior quarterback Daylin Lee completed 20 of 26 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns and was named MVP.

The Bulldogs, who lost four players due to positive COVID-19 tests, were led by Kanye Roberts’ 253 yards rushing on 26 carries for five touchdowns. Roberts finished the season with 3,503 yards rushing and 58 touchdowns to lead Wallace-Rose Hill to a state-record 7,048 yards rushing this season.

Roberts, who has committed to play next season at Appalachian State, was named most outstanding offensive player for Wallace-Rose Hill.

Marquis Adams scored four touchdowns – three rushing and one receiving – for Shelby to earn outstanding offensive player honors for Shelby.

Shelby’s defensive player of the game went to senior linebacker Malaki Hamrick. A University of North Carolina commitment, Hamrick had 14 tackles including one sack as the Golden Lions limited Wallace-Rose Hill to seven second-half points. Antwon Montgomery, who had a team-high eight tackles, was Wallace-Rose Hill’s defensive player of the game.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association also handed out two sportsmanship award winners – Oscar Iraheta from Wallace-Rose Hill and Luke Williams from Shelby.
