Despite being without seven players, the Charlotte Hornets edged the Sacramento Kings in a 124-123 shootout victory on Friday night at the Spectrum Center.
The Hornets were without starting guards LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier, starting center Mason Plumlee and reserves Jalen McDaniels and Ish Smith due to health and safety protocols and P.J. Washington and Nick Richards due to a non-COVID-19-related illness.
Rookie James Bouknight (24 points, 6 rebounds) came off the bench to lead the Hornets, who improved to 15-13 in front of 16,335 fans in their last game before a six-game road trip that starts on Monday at Dallas.
Other standouts for the Hornets were Miles Bridges (23 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists), Kelly Oubre Jr. (22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Cody Martin (19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists) and Gordon Hayward (19 points, 7 assists).
The loss ruined Shelby native Alvin Gentry’s lone trip to Charlotte this season; A 1973 Shelby High graduate, Gentry is interim Kings’ head coach.
