After the Carolina Panthers learned starting quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a partial fracture of his scapula, the team has is expected to sign quarterback Matt Barkley off the Titans practice squad, pending a Wednesday physical.

Darnold’s injury was discovered after a MRI on his right shoulder Monday. Several reports indicate the Panthers think Darnold suffered the injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-6 home loss to the New England Patriots.

With Darnold expected to be out of action for “several weeks,” backup P.J. Walker is expected to get his second career start in Sunday’s game at the Arizona Carindals; Walker won his only previous NFL start last season at home against Detroit.

Barkley, 31 was a fourth-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 out of Southern California. He has 19 games of NFL experience (seven starts) for the Eagles (2013-14), Chicago Bears (2016) and Buffalo Bills (2018-20) with 2,699 yards passing, 11 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
