When Lincolnton Shelby renew their football series in Friday’s 2nd round of the Class 2A playoffs, it’ll resume a matchup loaded with history.

Not only was the 1st meeting between the schools in 1921 the 1st football game in Lincolnton, but their 1962 meeting that ended in a scoreless tie helped usher in the overtime rules that have been a part of N.C. high school football since the 1970s.
Shelby routed Lincolnton 68-0 in the historic 1921 meeting that was played on Nov. 4, 1921 and holds a 47-16-4 all time series lead in a matchup that was played annually from 1941 to 1973 and 1997 to 2012 when they were conference rivals.
Friday’s matchup also is the 6th postseason meeting (Shelby leads 4-1).
But the 1962 scoreless tie led to a historical shift in the way governing bodies dealt with ties.
It’s because that result – in the 3rd week of the 1962 season – ended up as the lone league blemish in both team’s schedule in that year’s Southwestern Conference of the old Western N.C. Activities Association.
The rules of that era led to infrequent ties and a postseason coaches’ vote should teams share the league title back in the era when only 1 league team advanced to postseason play.
In 1962, it led to hard feelings for Shelby when Lincolnton was voted by the other 6 league coaches to represent the Southwestern Conference; Lincolnton would lose 19-18 to Wilkes Central in a game played at old Lenoir High School.
Neither of the school’s legendary coaches – Lincolnton’s Von Ray Harris and Shelby’s Gerald Allen – were pleased with the process.
Said Harris to a Shelby Star reporter before the vote was cast: “Not fair as far as the other coaches are concerned. It is obvious how I will vote and how coach Allen will vote. But pity the poor people who will have to make a choice.
“We will have to find some way to do away with such situtions as we are in now.”
Allen’s comment appears to have an eye of what the future would become.

“I don’t believe there will ever be a satisfactory solution until we are allowed to play off ties,” Allen told The Shelby Star.
The very next year the rule was changed – at least in the old WNCHSAA.
That’s when every regular season tie was ended with what was called a “penetration playoff” that’s used today with each team getting possession at the 10 yard line with 4 downs to score.
However, from 1963 to 1976 when the WNCHSAA folded, those “overtime results” were rarely used for anything more than brief bragging rights. It’s because they only came into play if the teams who tied were deadlocked in the league standings at season’s end.
That would happen 3 times in the Southwestern Conference in the coming years.
The following year, Shelby and Kings Mountain tied at 7 in a midseason matchup pitting teams that would both eventually finish 9-0-1 overall. Shelby won the tiebreaker 6-3 that would give them the league’s postseason playoff berth at year’s end.
In 1965, East Rutherford and Lincolnton tied at 6 before East Rutherford won 6-0 in the tiebreaker to take the league’s lone playoff berth.
Finally, in 1973, Shelby and Crest tied at 14 before Crest won 7-6 in the tiebreaker that would give the Chargers their first-ever state playoff berth as the No. 2 league postseason team.
Elsewhere in the state, the established N.C. High School Athletic Association that continues to govern high school athletics either repeated tiebreaking games, coaches’ votes or statistics to break ties when necessary.
Postseason games that ended in tie scores were determined by yardage until the NCHSAA adopted the current overtime rules in 1975.

Less than a month after Charlotte FC qualified for the postseason for the 1st time in its 2nd season, the club announced it has fired head coach Christian Lattanzio and assistant coach Andy Quy.
“We would like to thank Christian and Andy for their time at the Club,” Charlotte FC owner David Tepper said in a news release. “They helped guide us through the last 18 months and we are all appreciative of their contributions to Charlotte FC.”
Charlotte FC will now to seek to find its 3rd head caoch in 3 years as a franchise as the MLS expansion team fired original head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez in May 2022 after less than half the team’s inaugural season.
