11-6-23 roundup: Pro football and basketball, College football, basketball and hockey, High school football, soccer and volleyball, Middle school soccer, volleyball and wrestling, NASCAR

By Richard Walker

Gardner-Webb and Charlotte have certainly endured some hardship during the 2023 college football season.

Charlotte 49ers first-year head coach Biff Poggi (right) during Saturday’s overtime win at Tulsa.

They did again on Saturday only this time both teams pulled off tremendous road come-from-behind overtime victories.

On Saturday afternoon in Smithfield, R.I., Gardner-Webb found itself down 38-24 late in the fourth quarter before freshman Jaylen King and graduate transfer Gino English led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a 45-44 overtime victory.

Later on Saturday, walkon quarterback Trexler Ivey started for Charlotte after being questionable with injury earlier in the week and guided a pair of drives that helped the 49ers to get into overtime and then win in the extra period by a 33-26 score.

Gardner-Webb’s victory was the Runnin’ Bulldogs 3rd straight win, improved coach Tre Lamb’s team to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the first-year Big South-OVC Association and kept G-W alive for a league title; Tennessee Martin (7-2, 4-1) leads the league by a half-game over G-W and Southeast Missouri (4-5, 3-1).

Gardner-Webb actually built a 21-10 lead before falling behind 38-24.

That just set up a second straight week of late-game dramatics with a pair of TD drives in the final four minutes to forge a 38-all tie.

On the tying drive, a late hit by Bryant knocked King out of the game but English came on to finish the drive.

Then after Bryant scored a TD for a 44-38 lead, it’s decision to go for 2 was thwarted by G-W linebacker William McRainey’s pass deflection.

On the Runnin’ Bulldogs possession, Jayden Brown quickly put G-W in scoring position with a 21-yard run before English threw a TD pass to A.J. Johnson and kicked Jay Billingsley booted a walkoff extra point for the victory.

The win was Gardner-Webb’s 1st in OT since the spring 2021 season and evened their record at 8-8 all-time in such contest.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs next play at Tennessee Tech on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

In Tulsa, Okla., the first meeting between the 49ers and Golden Hurricane saw the lead change hands 3 times in the 4th quarter before Tulsa forced overtime on a field goal with 5 seconds left in regulation.

The Golden Hurricane scored the game’s 1st 17 points before Charlotte took an 18-17 lead on Kyle Cunanan’s 3rd field goal of the day with 10:38 to play.

Tulsa reclaimed the lead at 23-18 with 5:03 to play before Ivey directed a 6-play, 70-yard drive capped by his 18-yard TD pass to Jack Hestera, then found Colin Weber for a 2-point pass and a 26-23 49ers lead with 59 seconds left.

The hosts then marched 66 yards in 8 plays before settling for a field goal to force overtime.

Ivey’s 1-yard TD quarterback sneak on Charlotte’s overtime possession and Cunanan’s extra point put Charlotte back ahead 33-26 in the opening possession of the extra period.

Then after Nikhai Hill-Green nearly ended with the game with an interception on Tulsa’s first overtime – it was overturned and ruled an incomplete pass – Dontate Balfour ended the game with a pass interception on a third-and-10 try by the Golden Hurricanes.

It was Charlotte’s 6th overtime game and 3rd straight overtime victory.

The 49ers (3-6, 2-3) next plays at home on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Memphis in another American Athletic Conference game.

Charlotte 49ers honor: 49ers linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green on Monday was named American Athletic Conference defensive player of the week for his efforts in the 49ers’ 33-26 overtime road win at Tulsa.

Hill-Green led Charlotte with 11 tackles, matching his own mark for the most by a 49er this season. He added a season-high 2.0 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

Hill-Green is the 3rd 49ers players to win AAC player of the week honors; Punter Grant Gonya was named special teams player of the week following his performance at No. 25 Florida and linebacker Demetrius Knight was named defensive player of the week following his performance in the 49ers victory at East Carolina.

Pro football

If the Carolina Panthers’ 1-7 isn’t bad enough, the team’s injury list continues to grow as the team preps for a short week as it returns to action on Thursday at the Chicago Bears.

The Panthers held a walk-through Monday in preparation for the game and 8 players were listed as out for the practice.

Two of those players – outside linebacker Brian Burns (elbow) and cornerback CJ Henderson – left Sunday’s game with concussions. In order for either of them to play on Thursday, they’ll have to clear the league’s concussion protocol and that seems unlikely before Thursday’s game.

Other injured players are wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (ankle), wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. (elbow), tight end Stephen Sullivan (shoulder), outside linebacker Luiji Vilain (knee), safety Xavier Woods (thigh), and linebacker Chandler Wooten (ankle).

Carolina will have a similar practice on Tuesday before travelling to Chicago on Wednesday.

The 2023 Carolina Panthers’ schedule:
