11-5-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school football and soccer, College football and baseball, Auto racing
By Richard Walker
Before last week’s heartbreaking 37-34 overtime loss at the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers’ fans had visions of 2014 dancing in their heads.

Those ideas will remain this week when the Panthers visit the Cincinnati Bengals for the first time since… you guessed it… 2014!
Back then, Carolina bounced back from a 3-8-1 start to win the final four games of the season to take the NFC South Division title with a 7-8-1 record that remains the lone losing record for a NFC South champion in its 21-year history.
At 2-6, the Panthers are two games behind Atlanta (4-4) in a division race with New Orleans and Tampa Bay are tied for second place with 3-5 records.
Ironically, that 2014 visit to Cincinnati was in the first game of a frustrating seven-game winless streak and the 37-37 result remains the only tie game in Panthers’ history.
Carolina had started that season 2-0 and 3-2 before the tie sent the Panthers’ spiraling.
The contest was billed as Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly’s homecoming game to Cincinnati; Kuechly, a former Cincinnati St. Xavier High standout, had more than 100 friends and family in attendance for his 13-tackle performance.
The contest wasn’t decided until the Bengals’ Mike Nugent missed a potentially game-winning 36-yard field goal on the game’s final play.
At the time, the contest was the highest-scoring tie in NFL history and saw the teams combined for 944 yards of total offense.
Gameday: Carolina Panthers (2-6) at Cincinnati Bengals (4-4), 1 p.m. on Sunday
TV: FOX (Kevin Kugler, Mark Sanchez, Laura Okmin)
RADIO: FM 99.7 in Charlotte is flagship station (Anish Shroff, Jake Delhomme, Luke Kuechly, Kristen Balboni, Jim Szoke)
THE SERIES: Carolina leads the series 3-2-1 including a 31-21 victory in the last meeting in Charlotte in 2018.
RANKINGS AMONG NFL (After Week 8): Carolina offense – 29th overall, 19th rushing, 28th passing. Carolina defense – 21st overall, 20th rushing, 18th passing. Cincinnati offense – 13th overall, 30th rushing, 6th passing. Cincinnati defense – 14th overall, 21st rushing, 15th passing.
