College basketball
Gaston College won its first basketball game in 50 years in a 79-72 victory at Charlotte’s Johnson and Wales University.
The Rhinos, who will host Erskine College on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Gastonia’s Piedmont Community Charter, outscored the host Wildcats 20-12 in the final 10:49 of the contest.
Gaston College’s victory was its first since the college’s 85-65 victory over Lenoir Community College in the third-place game of the old N.C. Community College Conference on Feb. 26, 1972 at Kinston’s old Grainger High School. Gaston College decided to restart its athletic program last summer.
“I’m really proud of this team,” Rhinos head coach David “Dickey” Nutt said. “We haven’t had a lot of time together since we just started. We grew up tonight because it was a full house for them. So this is a really quality win for us.”
