11-26-21 roundup: High school football and basketball, Pro basketball and football, College football

By Richard Walker

South Point won a thriller and Shelby dominated the top seed in the playoffs to highlight Friday’s area high school football action.

South Point scored late in regulation to force overtime, then won 34-27 at Crest to advance to next week’s Western N.C. 3A championship game.

The Red Raiders (11-3) avenged an earlier loss at Crest as Tyson “A.J.” Riley and Elijah Phifer scored two touchdowns apiece and Charles Birtwhistle kicked four extra points and two field goals.

Phifer completed a key third down pass on South Point’s last drive in regulation, then scored on a 2-yard run with 10 seconds left before Birtwhistle’s extra point forced overtime.

In the extra period, Phifer scored on a 5-yard run and South Point’s defense intercepted Crest on a fourth down one play after a holding penalty nullified a potential 9-yard Chargers’ touchdown pass.

South Point advances to play at Greensboro Dudley (12-1) next week; Dudley advanced with a 20-6 win at Statesville.

Crest finished 10-3 overall.

Shelby routed top-seeded Reidsville 31-14 in a matchup of the state’s winningest high school football programs.

The victory improved Shelby to 13-1 and advanced the Golden Lions into the Western finals for the 15th time in the last 19 seasons.

Daylin Lee had two touchdown passes, Jalon Petty and Bricen Kee had touchdown runs, Jack Berkowitz had a field goal and two extra points and Shelby’s defense forced a safety against the previously unbeaten Rams (12-1).

Petty’s 11-yard TD run in the second quarter erased a 7-3 Reidsville lead and gave the Golden Lions the lead for good.

The Carolina Panthers revolving offensive line will continue this weekend after head coach Matt Rhule said Dennis Daley would start at left tackle in Sunday’s 1 p.m. game at the Miami Dolphins.

Daley, who hasn’t finished either of the last two games because of a glute injury, has been a full participant in practice all this week.

Also, since right guard John Miller is doubtful due to an ankle injury, Rhule said Trent Scott is likely to return to the starting lineup.

That would mean a rare repeat of the Panthers’ starting lineup from two weeks ago Arizona and leave the team with eight different offensive line combinations in 12 games this season.

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ 2021 schedule (with results):

Sept. 12 New York Jets (W 19-14)
