11-18-23 roundup: Pro football and basketball, College football and basketball, High school football and basketball, Middle school soccer, volleyball and wrestling

By Richard Walker

Every week this season, www.CarolinasSportsHub.com will look back at the Carolina Panthers’ historic 2003 season that ended with the franchise’s first trip to the Super Bowl.

Stephen Davis scores the winning touchdown in a 2003 victory over Washington.

Week 11: Stephen Davis’ 3-yard TD run that was protested, reviewed and confirmed was the difference in another Carolina Panthers’ comeback victory, this time by a 20-17 margin over the Washington Redskins. The winning play and results was especially sweet for Davis, the Spartanburg, S.C., native who played the first 6 years of his career with the Redskins before signing a free agent contract with Carolina before the 2003 season.

After Saturday’s 34-10 home win over Charleston Southern clinched Gardner-Webb’s 2nd straight conference title – the inaugural Big South-OVC championship – the school has invited Fans, alumni, and friends to a watch party of the FCS playoff selection show at the on-campus Brinkley Amphitheater on Sunday at noon.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs limited visiting Charleston Southern to just 81 yards and outscored the Buccaneers 21-0 in the second half to wrap up the win and title.

Gardner-Webb finishes the regular season with a 7-4 overall and 5-1 conference record. While the Runnin’ Bulldogs share the Big South-OVC title with UT Martin they get the league’s automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs by virtue of a 38-34 win over the Skyhawks on Oct. 28.

This is the first time Gardner-Webb has gone to the postseason in back-to-back seasons since it was a junior college in the 1951 and 1952 Golden Isles Bowls at Brunswick, Ga.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished the regular season 5-0 at home for the 1st undefeated home record since the 2003 season when they went 6-0.
