Shelby will meet Greene Central on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary for the 2021 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2A state championship.

The Golden Lions have previously advanced to the state finals three times – finishing as runner-up in 2008 and winning the 2009 and 2010 championships.

Shelby advanced to the final with Tuesday’s 1-0 Western final victory over Lincolnton.

Pro basketball

The Charlotte Hornets won their fourth straight game with a strong second half in a 97-87 victory over the visiting Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Terry Rozier (19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), Miles Bridges (17 points, 10 rebounds), Kelly Oubre (14 points), LaMelo Ball (11 points, 6 rebounds, career-high 14 assists) and Jalen McDaniels (11 points) led Charlotte (9-7).

Charlotte’s 21-2 surge to end the third quarter helped the Hornets take a 75-65 into the final quarter.

The Hornets will pursue their first five-game winning streak in 4 1-2 years in their next game on Friday at home against the Indiana Pacers.

Pro football

Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule wouldn’t declare Cam Newton his starting quarterback on Wednesday but he did say “it’s trending that way.”

After signing with the Panthers last week, most have expected Newton to start Sunday’s game against the Washington Football Team that is coached by Newton’s longtime Carolina head coach Ron Rivera.
