The Charlotte 49ers will hold their 10th “Senior Day” on Saturday and 1st-year head coach Biff Poggi likens it to seeing your children leave home.

“Seniors Days are about mixed emotions,” Poggi said at his Tuesday weekly news conference. “You’re happy because guys are graduating and going on with their lives. But they’re also sad days because you’re not able to coaching them on a day-to-day basis.
“So it’ll be an emotional day.”

Quarterback Jalon Jones, who has started 6 of 9 games, is among the 19 seniors to be honored. Among the others are projected starters like left offensive tackle Lucas Gramlick, left offensive guard Kevin Williams, Jr., graduate defensive linemen Austin Fontaine and Eyabi Oki-Anoma, linebacker Demetrius Knight II and safeties Wayne Jones and Isaiah Hazel.

Charlotte (3-7, 2-4) was eliminated from bowl eligibility last week in a 44-38 overtime loss to Memphis.

“We feel like our program is getting better every week,” Poggi said. “Even though we’re disappointed with losing to Memphis last week, we feel like we’re getting better and better.”

A key to last week’s highest-scoring game of the year was a Richardson Stadium-record 198 yards rushing by sophomore walkon running back Hahsaun Wilson in the loss.

“I think it’s important to run the football,” Poggi said. “We’ve said that from the beginning. It is the style of play (offensive coordinator) Mike (Miller) and I want to use.”

More college football

The Charlotte Sports Foundation (CSF) and Tepper Sports & Entertainment (TSE) announced an extension of their partnership on Wednesday to host events at Bank of America Stadium. Included in the agreement is the Duke’s Mayo Classic and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The bowl game has called Bank of America Stadium home for 22 years.

This year’s college football games included the Duke’s Mayo Classic on September 2nd with North Carolina taking on South Carolina. In December the Duke’s Mayo Bowl will feature teams from the ACC and SEC. Additionally, the Atlantic Coast Conference maintains a long-term agreement to host the ACC Football Championship Game at the Stadium.

The struggling Carolina Panthers are switching offensive play callers again.

Head coach Frank Reich announced he would reclaim play-calling duties after offensive coordinator Thomas Brown had handled the chores for the last 3 games.

Reich told the media it will still be a “collaborative” effort with Brown and not a reflection on the job he was doing; The Panthers actually are 1-2 with Brown as play-calling and 0-6 with Reich handlingt he chores.

“This is not about Thomas, this is about me, it’s about the team,” Reich said to open his news conference on Wednesday. “I’m in this position because of years of being a successful offensive coordinator and play caller. We have eight games left, and I just want to give my attention, and everything I can do and everything I can bring to bear to help the offense take a next step.
“So, I trust Thomas more than anybody. And he’s helped me become a better coach and a better man. So this isn’t about that. This is about the team. This is about us all playing the role that we think can help us these last eight games.”

Later, the Panthers released their long injury report following news that tight end Hayden Hurst had been placed into concussion protocol.

Other players missing Wednesday’s practice were veteran right tackle Taylor Moton (rest/knee) and DeShawn Williams (not injury related).

Cornerback Jaycee Horn (hamstring), tight end Ian Thomas (calf), wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (ankle), guard Austin Corbett (calf), outside linebacker Marquis Haynes Sr. (back), cornerback C.J. Henderson (concussion) and safety Xavier Woods (thigh) were limited participants.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns (concussion), wide receiver D.J. Chark Jr. (elbow) and tight end Stephen Sullivan (shoulder) were listed as full participants.

Burns and Henderson remain in the concussion protocol but can practice.
