By Richard Walker
A longtime mainstay on the Charlotte Hornets bench has died at 61.

James Loague “Little Mack” McCullough Jr., died on Oct. 27 at Novant Hospice 6 1/2 years after he suffered a stroke.
McCullough was a beloved equipment manager for the Hornets who worked for the team from their inaugural season in 1988 until his January 2017 stroke. He also worked for the West Charlotte athletic department in addition to working as an equipment manager for the WNBA Charlotte Sting and the minor league baseball Charlotte Knights.
Born on Feb. 16, 1962, in Charlotte, his late parents James L. McCullough Sr. and Dorothy Mae Bullard McCullough called him “Sonny” when he grew up in the University Park Neighborhood.
A 1981 West Charlotte graduate, McCullough was later work as a coach’s assistant for the football, basketball and track.
Known for his devotion to Duke Blue Devils’ basketball and Dallas Cowboys’ football, McCullough went on to become one of the longest-serving employees in Hornets’ history.
McCullough suffered his stroke on Jan. 21, 2017 after performing a Hornets’ post-road trip routine at the Spectrum Center. The effects of the stroke left him kept him from working for the Hornets and he spent the last years of his life in a skilled nursing facility.
