A week ago, 15 teams from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties began N.C. High School Athletic Association football playoff journeys.

This week, nine of them are still pursuing state titles after first-round victories.

Here’s a look at each of those team’s Friday night matchups:

(Class 3A)
South Point at Pisgah
Series: South Point leads 3-0
South Point playoff history: 33rd appearance (55-26-2 record)
Storyline: Red Raiders meet Pisgah for fourth time – all in the playoffs. Pisgah enters as the only playoff winner of the six postseason teams from the Mountain 7 3A Conference.

Forestview at Parkwood
Series: 1st meeting
Forestview playoff history: 19th appearance (7-18 record)
Storyline: Jaguars snapped a four-game playoff losing streak last week and seek their first advance to the third round of the playoffs since 2014. Parkwood is the Rocky River 2A/3A’s No. 2 overeall team and No. 1 3A team.

West Rowan at Crest
Series: Tied 2-2
Crest playoff history: 36th appearance (71-32 record)
Storyline: Chargers face West Rowan for the fifth time – all in the playoffs. Crest won in 2002 and 2014 but lost in 2016 and 2019. West Rowan is the Southern Piedmont 3A runner-up.

Kings Mountain vs. West Charlotte at Waddell
Series: 1st meeting
Kings Mountain playoff history: 25th appearance (32-23-2 record)
Storyline: Mountaineers have now won five straight first round playoff games and seek their fourth third round advance in four years. West Charlotte was No. 3 overall in the Queen City 3A/4A and the No. 1 3A team.

East Lincoln at Statesville
Series: Statesville leads 6-0
East Lincoln playoff history: 25th appearance (33-22 record)
Storyline: A rematch of Statesville’s 23-6 regular season win on Sept. 24. East Lincoln previously lost a 1986 3A playoff game to the Greyhounds.

(Class 2A)
Polk County at Shelby
Series: Shelby leads 3-0
Shelby playoff history: 58th appearance (133-41-5 record)
Storyline: Shelby won its 28th straight opening round game last week and seeks a return to the third round for the 11th time in 12 years. Polk County is the No. 3 team in the Mountain Foothills 2A.

Burns at Hendersonville
Series: Tied 1-1
Burns playoff history: 24th appearance (32-22 record)
Storyline: Burns has now won nine of its last 10 first round games and faces a team that it recently met in an exciting regular season series. Hendersonville, which won the Mountain Foothills 2A, won 27-21 at Burns in overtime in 2017 and lost 56-55 at home in 2018.

Forest Hills at East Gaston
Series: 1st meeting
East Gaston playoff history: 13th appearance (6-12 record)
Storyline: The Warriors ended a five-game playoff losing streak that dated to 2006 when it last advanced to the third round. Forest Hills was No. 3 overall in the Rocky River 2A/3A and the No. 2 2A team.

West Lincoln at Maiden
Series: Maiden leads 40-8
West Lincoln playoff history: 12th appearance (3-11 record)
Storyline: A rematch of Maiden’s 20-14 regular season win on Sept. 24. West Lincoln won its second first round game in three years. In this series, West Lincoln ended a 20-game losing streak with wins in 2017 and 2018 but has now lost two straight to the Blue Devils.

High school boys soccer

A local team will be advancing to the N.C. Class 2A state soccer final after Shelby and Lincolnton won Western semifinal games on Thursday and will meet next Tuesday for the right to play in the state finals.

Shelby shut out Community School of Davidson 2-0 while Lincolnton won 6-5 on penalty kicks against Salisbury after the teams tied 2-all in regulation and overtime.

The 2021 Western N.C. 2A final will be played at Lincolnton’s Battleground Stadium.
