Burns defied history Thursday with an impressive 42-0 win over visiting rival Shelby in the second round of the N.C. Class 2A playoffs on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs moved on to third round of the playoffs as they beat Shelby for the second time in three weeks. It marks only the third time in the last 63 seasons that Shelby has lost in the playoffs in a rematch of a regular season game; The previous losses came in 1985 to Kings Mountain and 2001 to Lincolnton.
Burns left doubt about the outcome with a 28-point first half before adding one touchdown apiece in the third and fourth quarters to hand Shelby its largest playoff loss in its 180-game postseason history.
Shelby previous worst playoff defeat came in 1996 when visiting Brevard beat the Golden Lions 36-0 in the second round of the N.C. 3A playoffs.
Ryan Thompson had three touchdowns – two on running plays and another on a pass from Ben Mauney – and Jeremiah Norris, Cahari Haynes and Lemont Wilson also had scoring runs for the Bulldogs.
It was the first time Shelby had been shutout since a 25-0 loss at South Pointe, S.C., in 2017.
