11-10-21 roundup: College basketball and football, Pro football and basketball, High school football and boys soccer, Middle school boys soccer, volleyball and wrestling

By Richard Walker

After five straight losses, the Charlotte emphatically snapped their slump with a 118-108 win at the Memphis Grizzlies behind a record-setting performance from Kelly Oubre, Jr.

Oubre scored 37 points to set a franchise record for points off the bench.

It came in a game Charlotte trailed by eight with 5:31 left in the third quarter before a 25-8 surge pushed them ahead and helped the Hornets improve to 6-7 on the season.

Oubre’s effort came on 13-of-17 shooting that included seven of nine on 3-pointers. The previous franchise record was 36 points by Malik Monk in a Feb. 1, 2021 win at the Miami Heat. Oubre knocked a pair of 3-pointers with less than two minutes to play to push Charlotte’s lead from eight to 14 points.

Charlotte also got 25 points from Gordon Hayward and another near-triple-double from LaMelo Ball (12 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists).

South Carolina native Ja Morant scored 32 points – 19 in the first quarter – to lead the Grizzlies.

Gaston College stays unbeaten: Despite trailing much of the second half, the Rhinos rallied to force overtime before pulling away for a 95-92 overtime victory over Lincolnton’s Combine Academy on Wednesday night at Gaston Christian.

Damon Davis (29 points, 10 rebounds) had his second double-double of the season to lead Gaston College (3-0), which hosts Lakeside Prep on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gastonia’s Piedmont Community Charter School in its next game.

Kalil Camara (14 points, 13 rebounds) also had a double-double and Da’marco Watson (15 points) and Dee Merriweather (11 points) were other double-figure scorers.

Merriweather’s 3-pointer from the left corner with 16.9 seconds left in regulation forced the extra period of a game in which the Rhinos trailed by eight three times in the final 8 1-2 minutes, the last time at 78-70 at the 6:36 mark.

In the overtime, Gaston College limited Combine Academy to one of 10 field goal shooting, Watson’s driving layup gave the Rhinos the lead for good at 91-90 and Merriweather hit two clinching free throws with 2.0 seconds left.

Charlotte 49ers signing: Point guard Nik Graves of Durham is the first member of coach Ron Sanchez’s 2022 recruiting class. Graves played his first two years of high school at Durham Academy before spending his last two years of high school at Greensboro Day School.

Graves is a legacy player as his mother Nikki Richardson played for the 49ers women’s team from 1996-99 and was a 1,000-point career scorer.

Pro football

Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Sam Darnold will be placed on injured reserve and coach Matt Rhule said he’ll be out “four to six weeks.”

Darnold, who has started all nine of the team’s game this season, has an incomplete fracture of his right shoulder blade; The team thinks the injury happened during last Sunday’s 24-6 home loss to the New England Patriots.

Darnold originally injured his right shoulder in a different spot in a 19-13 win at Atlanta on Oct. 31.

P.J. Walker is expected to start at quarterback in Sunday’s game at the Arizona Cardinals. His backup will be veteran Matt Barkley, who was signed by the Panthers off the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad earlier this week.

Rhule added that the team was “open” to signing another quarterback. When asked if that could mean a return to the Panthers for free agent quarterback Cam Newton, Carolina’s No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Rhule said he wouldn’t discuss “hypotheticals.”

Hollifield staying at Virginia Tech: Shelby’s Dax Hollifield is choosing to take advantage of the NCAA’s extra year of eligibility and stay another year at Virginia Tech.

“I’m coming back, so I’m not a senior,” Hollifield told The Roanoke Times on Tuesday.

Hollifield was one of the highest profile recruits under Hokies’ coach Justin Fuente chose Virginia Tech over Clemson on his 2018 signing day at Shelby High School.

“I don’t want my legacy here to end right now,” Hollifield said. “I love this place and I want this place to be successful.”

The Hokies are 4-5 with three games left – Duke at home this weekend and road games at Miami and Virginia – and need to win twice to become eligible for a bowl games
